I have allergies to cats and own two Persians myself. The best thing you can do is get rid of the cat, but who are we kidding? I would never do that and doubt you would too. So realistically you need to get rid of the source of the allergy. More likely than not you are allergic to the protein in their saliva. Cats are constantly grooming themselves. The protein in their saliva gets attached to their skin/fur and then once dry becomes airborne. First thing to do is bathe your cats regularly. I have done it with both of my cats since they were kittens. If you have never bathed them it could be challenging. I highly recommend holding their two front paws together when dipping them into the water receptacle (sink or bathtub) to avoid getting scratched. Don’t let them move towards you because they will try to jump onto you to escape and will use their claws to hold on (through your skin!) Secondly you need to get rid of the environmental problems. Vacuum often (a couple times a week). Change your bedding frequently. I cover things that my cats sit on regularly with something (towel or sheet) that I can wash in the laundry. This helps to capture deposits of their hair and remove it from the environment. Then there are prescriptions you can take yourself. Allegra or other antihistamines, eyedrops (I have never used them but just heard about them myself), and also flushing out your sinuses with saline solution. Good luck to you!

My wife and son were allergic to our cat.
We placed an air purifier in the house and bye bye itchy eyes and sneezes.
The cat sleeps on the bed and no problem.
The main allergen is pet dander. When it is flying in the air it gets into the lungs and sinuses and the allergic reaction occurs. The air purifier removes the pet dander from the air so it is not breathed in.

The sure way to do this is to buy an Ionic Breeze Ionizer from Sharper Image or on ebay. I was allergic to everything nearly and was sick of allergy shots. After I got the Ionic Breeze, poof, no allergies!
My mother and sister got one too.No other ionizer works like this.
It also removes oders from your home.
Also, for fur control, bathe your cat;)

Allergies to cats almost all the time is caused by the protein that is deposited on the hair when the cat licks its self. You may want to try the powder used to clean cats. Sprinkle some on and brush the cat. This will help lower the protein content. People do over time become allergic to cats. Not uncommon at all. Just brushing the cat each day to remove the loose hair does help. I knew a lady that had your problem and used a vacuum cleaner on the cat every day. I do think you will have to do this with some caution though. You may need to see a doctor for some help. Happy sneezing.

First off you CAN grow into allergies. I’ve done it. Have you tried taking Benadryl? You may also want to vacuum more often since in time the dander (which is what seems to trigger allergies) can build up. Try sweeping more often. And last of knowledge….there are wipes that are kind of like Wet Ones that you can use on your cat that is supposed to alleviate a lot of the allergens on a cat. Good luck to you. I don’t know what I’d do if I suddenly became allergic to cats since I always have several that I take care of.

All the previously mentioned methods will help reduce your symptoms. However, in order to get rid of your allergies, you need to go to an allergy specialist and get allergy desensitation shots. They may take two years to start working.

Well… first off your are going to have to go to the dr. to get some meds. I hope that never happens to me, I love my cat!!!!

Maybe its not the cat causing your allergies. if you’ve had the cat for a while w/o being allergic, it could be something else in your environment. i would go see an allergist to see what you are allergic to, and then maybe go on allergy shots.

That’s how my pollen allergy happened. i had no symptoms or anything for 16 years, and one Spring, i started to have itchy eyes, n runny nose.
I heard that was because you have something like “allergy factor container” in your system, and them factores are filling the container. When the container full-filled, overflowed, you start to have those allergy symptoms.
Once the container is overflowed, you basicaly cannot dicreace the “contents”. then you got to go on to immunity treatment.

    look
i am no expert but maybe go to the doctors. But maybe the cat needs a wash or it could have been something the cat got on his coat

  13. poppet24 says:

Well the same thing happened to me. I absolutely adore cats but am not able to touch them now because of my allergy. My eyes also swell up and my throat tightens up. Unfortunatley there is not much you can do except not have the cat around. I know that is hard especially when u love it so much but you have to make a decision. I know that the Rex breed of cat is allergy free because it has no fur as such. Hope you find a solution. Poppet from Australia.

Your symptoms are a sign of an over sensitive immune system. It is caused by your body overreacting to something that is not harmful. The only prevention for it is not to come in close contact with your cat. However, if you experience symptoms and you wish to cure it, you can try pseudoephedrine. You are also reminded that pseudoephedrine is a prescription drug and you should have your dorctor’s consent before using it.

I had an allergy to my cats started seeing a specialist and began recieving monthly allergy shots, thus building up a defense mechanism to my cat in body. Now me and my himalyians can co exsist. I do however limit how much I pat and put my face near hers

Tommy Fatboy is the Persian in question. He’s Jan’s alter-ego. Cute little bugger who’s oblivious of what’s going on. Fatboy loves to be leashed and even walked like you would a dog and he’s not afraid of dogs, large one in particular, in fact he thinks he’s a dog and hisses at cats. Jan’s allergy appeared after an operation she underwent 2 years ago and a doctor opined that changes to her immune system may be the cause. She was perfectly normal around Fatboy before the op. If anyone in a similar situation could throw some light.
