How Do I Adopt A Puppy For The First Time?

I’m moving into a new city alone and would like to adopt a puppy for the first time! I’ve always loved dogs, but my family never raised pets due to my mom’s allergies.
What requirements do adoption shelters and other owners have before they will let me adopt their puppy?

It depends on what type of dog, and what type of shelter.
To adopt from my rescue (which is only pit bulls, so we’re a little stricter) you need to be 21 years old, must own your home, have a fenced in yard, three references including a vet, have a home check done, attend obedience classes with the dog, provide the dog with regular vet care (which we check up on), cannot have a dog that is the same sex as the one you are adopting, cannot have any un-spayed or un-neutered dogs at all, and cannot have any children under 6 years old. Any of the requirements are flexible though, it depends on the applicant and our impression of them.
Some shelters will give a dog to anyone that pays the adoption fee… same with some owners in the ‘free to a good home’ ads.

What I would do is I would go adopt from an animal shelter, check for aggression, breed, diseases, past owners and if you plan on having kids check on child friendliness, food aggression, bathing and playfulness also check and the last thing you need to check on is age because if you want your dog to last a long time from now I would get a younger dog. Maybe check on gender and how much you should feed it that should be it. Make sure the dog is happy, I would recommend a nice, big, green yard for him/her to run around in, the Temperature for the dog and the climate then you should be able to adopt the dog. Glad I could help!

Rescues usually have more strict requirements for adopting dogs. Shelters (animal control) for example, are so desperate to make room in the kennels that pretty much anyone with the adoption fee money can get a dog. So please adopt one from a high kill shelter…there are so many dogs being put dog…good dogs too. If you choose a rescue, they often check references and what conditions the dog will be living in. Generally shelters (animal control) are much cheaper also…hope this helps. Thanks for adopting!

    Rescue from a shelter.
    The requirements are pretty simple:
    - You need to go and pick a puppy
    - Fill in some paperwork and pay a fee (somewhere upwards of $100)
    - The shelter will conduct a safety/home check to ensure you are able to care for a puppy
Once all that is done you can take puppy home! Just remember to look into a vet and take puppy their the day you get him for his needles, to get microchipped and checked out.
    Rescuing is the best feeling!
    Good luck
