Is It Possible To Suddenly Develop A Contact Allergy To A Pet?

I have a pet rat, that I have had for over a year…..I picked him up today and a few minutes later, my wrists started to itch and burn, so I put him down and looked and my wrists were covered in massive swollen hives. What is this all about? I don’t get it!

It can happen. The more you are exposed to something, the more you get sensitized. Like, if you have a bee sting allergy, the first time you get stung might be hardly anything, and then each successive time it will get worse.
Take some benadryl or a claritin.

just like everyone has the cancer cells in them since birth
how and why they suddenly become active is still the question
the same goes for allergies they are in everyone from birth
how and why they become active is still the question to this too!
I do know that you can be experiencing no allergic reaction for years to things.
then 1 day it becomes active, and from that day on you will be allergic for the rest of you life
it may stay at just a slight allergy to that thing or it could progressively become worse
    hope this helps
wash really well after handling the rat or try wearing latex gloves when you need to touch him
