I just bought a puppy(mini schnauzer)that I am allergic to.I don’t want to get rid of her because she is a good dog, plus I paid alot of money for her.I’ve never had allergies to dogs before, just cats.Is there something that I can do to calm my allergies(besides shaving her)because that doesn’t work.
YES-take a teaspoon of LOCAL honey each day to help your body develop immunities to all the air born irritants around you. These include pet dander, pollen, mold, smog and dust. Stay away from nose sprays and antihistamines as these tend to dry out your body resulting in sinus infections and long term kidney damage as well as other side effects. Local honey will cure your allergy to dogs but it will take a little while. You will also notice that you get less cold and flu symptoms and don’t catch every little germ that floats your way. Get healthy-naturally. Your body will thank you.
Caitlin: The protein that causes can and dog allergy are extremely similar in structure. I am not surprised that you are allergic to your dog, since you already have cat allergy. Understand that what makes you sick is a protein that is found in the saliva and urine of your puppy. This protein sticks to the skin and fur when puppy licks herself or goes to the bathroom. So, number 1 is do not let her lick you in the face (its best if she doesn’t like you at all, but she is a puppy and by golly puppies do lick!). After you finish playing and loving her, be sure to wash your hands. Change your clothes if you can. Shaving her will not work, because even if you take away the fur, she still has spit and pee (remember its the saliva and urine). There are things you can do to neutralize the protein that makes you sick. This is called denaturing the protein. Allerpet makes a formula just for dogs. It is a coat conditioner that you use once a week. I am including a link to their page so you can read about it. They also have a fun little true/false quiz to take. You can find Allerpet at the vet or an allergy supply house. Also, if you have a dog, you have to wash it. Alkaline Labs makes a special pet shampoo that will not only neutralize the allergens, but it will help control fleas, ticks and odors. I am sending a link to their page also. I am also including a link to a cat allergy page. I know you have a puppy, but cat and dog protein is so similar that you can treat it the same. I’d give it a shot before I got rid of a good dog that has already stolen your heart, Good luck to the both of you.
You can try some prevention methods to see if they work. These include bathing your dog at least once a week, keeping your dog out of your bedroom and washing your hands thoroughly after playing with it.
Of course, you can also medications whether OTC or prescription for relief. But I wouldn’t advise a long term reliance.
If you have had a cat allergy before, it would have been good to check on all other types of allergies that you may have before buying a pet.
