Which Kind Of Dog Food Is Good For Dogs With Really Bad Allergies?

I’ve been feeding my dog Canidae, it was good, but he has allergies and Canidae has a lot of different ingredients. I changed to eagle pack (fish), to isolate some ingredients and he was doing good. He’s been getting itchy again.
Recently I went on vacation and his caretaker gave him pedigree because she ran outta the food I gave her. I picked him up yesterday and she told me she had to buy some food. I had a bad feeling about feeding him something different. So he could be itchy because of the pedigree or he could have developed allergies from the eagle pack.
Do you know which ingredient your dog is allergic to? If you know that, the rest will be easy. Here is how to find out. The number 1 thing in the diet that dogs are allergic to is wheat, followed in order by corn, beef, and chicken. The way to find out is to start with wheat and feed a diet that is wheat free for a month. You will have to read everything – food, treats, etc. It takes a month to get a food worked out of the system. If after a month you are still having problems, move on to the next item – corn and so forth. In the mean time, benadryl will help with some of the worst of the itching as will brewers yeast. When you go through the entire list, if the itching is still going on and you go to the vet, at least you have done the first things he would have you do and this will save you and your dog time and you money. Good luck
My dog has a lot of skin allergies. I feed her Nutro Natural Choice Lamb and Rice. It seems to help
I would get ‘GO’ My dog has been doing realy well on it and he has alerrgies too.
Ug, would you eat what your feeding to your dog? Or would you eat any of the junk sold at a pet shop?
Get some nice chicken breasts (or canned chicken will do), cook them up, cut or rip them into pieces. Cook up some brown rice, chop some raw veggies (broccoli and spinach are the best) and mix it all together. This is close to what your dog would eat back in the wild and is ideal for an animal with allergies.
have you tried eukanuba
I would go to your vet and get Science Diet Z/D…its a low allergen food for dogs and cats like Canidae.
eukanuba or iams. They have a wide variety to choose from, even for allergy sensetive dogs like yours
My dog who had allergies did well on Science Diet z/d. It uses a hydrolyzed protein, which as I understand it doesn’t trigger the allergy trigger because the body doesn’t recognize it as a “protein”.
maybe feed her raw (Barf Diet )
The word BARF is an acronym for Biologically Appropriate Raw Food.
Every living animal on earth requires a biologically appropriate diet.
And if you think about it, not one animal on earth,
is adapted by evolution to eat a cooked food diet.http://www.northcoastmarines.com/barf.ht…http://www.rawlearning.com/rawfaq.html
I have used all the dog foods you have listed and my dog with food allergies had problems with both after awhile. After a good deal of research I found Royal Canin, not only do they make breed specific foods but several different allergy formulas. My dogs LOVE their food and the company has put tons of research ito their food. Check out Royal Canin USA’s website it has tons of info.
Ask your vet. Maybe they can recommend something.
First of all see a vet. Our pets need quality pet food. Read the ingredients list and learn what the stuff on there is and what it does (or does not do) to/for our pets. A quick pet food 101. If the pet food contains corn/corn products or by products it is a poor quality food. Do not pay attention to advertising, they all say there food is great. Corn is a filler that can trigger skin problems. (allergies, skin problems, itching and excessive shedding) By products is anything from an animal not fit for human consumption, including cancerous tissue. Quality foods have meat as the first ingredient. California Natural, Solid Gold, Innova and Merrick are a few of the best brands available. try innova, it is an all natural dog food with all natural ingrediants.
do not go with science diet as i had a sheltie that had allergies real bad with this food, not eukanuba, iams, pedigree, as it all has grain products and diseased decayed cancerous rendered euthanized animals in it and will cause you even more problems.
pedigree is not a good food to feed a dog with allergies and this could have triggered the allergy as it is full of fillers, by products and grains also.
You could go with the raw natural diet completely and this way you know what is in your dogs food. I feed the raw diet and innova when my kids have to feed my dogs.
if i where you i would go to the vet and she will tell you what your dog needs. she might need a food with a suppliment. my dog is on pills for his allergies. so i would just descuss it with your vet
I used to have a dog that was allergic to many of the dog foods that I tried. She could tolerate Eukanuba, by Iams. It was kind of expensive, but better than her being sick all of the time. If you can’t find one that doesn’t bother your dog, ask your vet for a recipe, you may have to make your own. Good luck.
Ask your vet – but stay away from dyes in dog food.
Science Diet
Before subjecting your dog to all sorts of different foods, we advise that you get him to a veterinarian and find out EXACTLY what it is he is allergic to. Vets can do “scratch tests” on the dog to find out what sorts of things are causing him to react. Once you know what you’re up against, you can pick a food that fits your dog’s specific needs. This will elminate the “guessing”, wasting money on a lot of different foods your dog can’t handle, and subjecting your dog to allergens that might eventually cause a severe reaction and kill him.
Nutro. My aunt’s dog had severe allergies and after switching to this food, his allergies cleared up within 3 weeks.
It is a holistic food with no chicken by-products and no ground yellow corn, which dogs cannot digest. The first three ingredients are human grade. It is guaranteed to improve skin and coat. They have three different lines with variations in each of the three lines. If your dog has allergies, I suggest not feeding him anything with chicken (like Chicken and Rice, etc.) because, while he may not be allergic to the chicken, he may be allergic to the corn that the farmers fed the chicken and may have been processed while making the food.
They also have a frequent buyers program and you recieve coupons from them when you sign up for it through their website.
It’s worth a try! Good luck!
By the way….studies have shown that there is a cancer causing ingredient in Science Diet, so I would watch out.
I’d use purina dog chow, and if not iams.
Try going to a feed store rather than PetSmart or Petco. The one I go to only sells really good quality foods and they are always willing to answer questions about the food.
I have a westie and he has skin allergies. The vet put him on medication which cost me $80 a month. Wow! Couldn’t afford that. My sister-n-law told me that her dogs were itchy and her vet told her to get Nutro Natural Choice Lamb & Rice Meal. So I tried it with my westie! What wonderful results! Within the week he had stopped itching and his skin had a soft pink glow, not that hot red irritated look. Give it a try. You can purchase it at Petco or I’m sure any pet store will carry it. Good Luck!
You should get him allergy tested by your vet. It only costs about $150 but you can select a food that he is not allergic to. My dog also has allergies and she is on natural balance. They have an allergy formula but my dog is doing fine in the regular.http://www.naturalbalanceinc.com/
